Storage Information
The Meal, Ready-To-Eat (MRE) is designed to sustain an individual engaged in heavy activity such as training or during actual field operations when normal food is not available. The MRE is a totally self-contained field ration consisting of a full meal packed in a flexible meal bag. The full bag is lightweight and fits easily into clothing pockets and rucksacks. Each meal bag contains an entrée and a variety of other components
MRE components are selected to complement each entree as well as provide necessary nutrition. The contents of one MRE meal bag provides an average of 1250 calories (13 % protein, 36 % fat, and 51 % carbs). It also provides 1/3 of the Military Recommended Daily Allowance of vitamins and minerals, making them invaluable for emergency situations or outdoor activities.
How important is storing your MREs.
Proper storage is key to preventing spoilage prematurely.
MREs are shelf-stable because they are heated in airtight containers and commercially sterilized to destroy bacteria that can render them unsafe for consumption. Storage temperatures play a vital role in preserving all emergency foods. Exposure to extreme temperatures, high humidity, direct sunlight, moisture, and pests can significantly reduce shelf life.
Storing your emergency food at around 60°F/15.6°C can extend its lifespan. At this temperature, MREs can last for 7 years or more (source: USDA). It's essential to prioritize proper storage to ensure the effectiveness and safety of your emergency food supply.
Keep your MREs in a cool, dry, and dark place off the floor. It's key to do regular inspections of your supply. Checking for damage, and rotating your inventory as needed. First-in, first-out (FIFO) stock rotation is a helpfull system to ensure your rations are available when you need them, the first items added to your supply should be the first consumed.
Why the inspection dates are important.
These dates are 1-5 years after the MRE was manufactured. MREs use Inspection dates rather than Expiration dates. This is vital to inventory, track, and rotate your emergency supplies.
When purchasing your MREs it's important to be aware of the manufacturing date and storage conditions.
